Typewritten with ink ribbon on cotton fabric, 210 x 180 cm- 2012
Is a typed tablecloth on cotton and one of the earliest works developed with the typewriter. Created in the years following the subprime mortgage crisis, the work revolves around the rating notations used by agencies such as Standard & Poor’s, Fitch, and Moody’s.
Based on a restricted system of letters, numbers, and signs, these classifications condense political and economic assessments into a compact, coded language. From the highest ratings to proximity to default, this system has significant consequences for everyday life, shaping conditions that are indirectly experienced by ordinary citizens.
The title Aladdin refers to a global data-analysis system associated with BlackRock, designed to process financial information and define market strategies. In this work, the domestic format of a tablecloth introduces this abstract language into a shared, everyday space. Aladdin marks the starting point of a research with the typewriter based on a limited and codified language that, over time, transforms into a system of signs.
